Such idealism may seem precious in 2020, but “Crip Camp” turns its central struggles into an underdog story that doesn’t feel dated in the least.

For so many of them, this was their first opportunity to speak about the intricacies of their experience, which admittedly were different given their range of disabilities, but there’s a thrill in watching them bond, especially in one illuminating scene where they lament the lack of alone time they’re allowed, protective parents never far away. This is not one of those movies. Included in the group were Lomax, Jackson and Heumann. The saga of Camp Jened, the summer camp for disabled teens that took off in the early 1970s, has enough appeal to consume an entire movie: The annual Catskills event provided ostracized youth with the opportunity to experience a sense of normalcy — earnest, unfettered human connections — not to mention all the sex and drugs.

This a documentary that should be seen by everyone.To learn something about emphaty.

In my years in this business, I’ve seen a lot of manipulative documentaries that pull at the heartstrings—so many that I’ve grown a little immune to them and downright annoyed by the ones that feel more like exploitation than empowerment.

The story evolves into the story of the disability movement in America, which was led by one of the campers. The Black Panthers brought in hot meals to keep the protesters fed. Like many of the best documentaries, more and more of which have been cropping up on Netflix, it educates us on an underrepresented minority, adding nuance and specificity to an experience that might have previously been painted in broad strokes, the kind of film that shouldn’t just be recommended viewing but also required.

What an amazing story this was documenting the struggles and lives of the disabled in America culminating with Bush number 1 signing the Americans with Dissabilities Act (ADA). Rated R. Talk of sex. The title is kind of misleading because most of the film takes place after camp goers' time at Jened. No matter how fondly you recall your time at sleepaway camp, chances are your experiences weren’t as formative as the ones recounted in “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” a documentary streaming on Netflix. After camp and college, Heumann and LeBrecht ended up in Berkeley, Calif.,  where they connected with the activism surrounding the Center for Independent Living.

Instead, it turns into more of a scattershot portrait, careening off in a few different directions that might have been better suited for the miniseries treatment. | LeBrecht, who appears as a talking head (a longtime sound designer, he also contributed to the movie’s audio mix), notes that this was no ordinary demonstration. For people with disabilities, independent living means having autonomy,  self-respect and the accessibility, support and programs necessary to provide equal opportunities in all aspects of life.

The saga eventually settles on Judy Heumann, the civil rights advocate who later served in both the Clinton and Obama administrations. In a demonstration organized by Disabled in Action on March 12, 1990, dozens of disabled people crawled up the stone steps of the inaccessible Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., to emphasize the lack of access that still existed nearly 20 years after the 504 sit-ins. Finally getting the ADA signed and enforced was a 20yr struggle I remember well. It is an art piece dedicated to those who society shunned rising up to change the world for everyone. But it was also, for many of the campers, a place where they could live in a free atmosphere with others who had a disability, and where the friendships they cultivated boosted their confidence. When someone is told their feelings and needs are as valuable as anyone else’s, they feel able to express those feelings and needs in ways they never would otherwise.
