Whatever you do, think carefully about your approach — as carefully and thoughtfully as our colleagues in the Census Bureau have done. Thesis is supported by the rest of the paper. It is generally accepted practice in the federal government – Census Bureau, FDA, Department of Education, Department of Defense – to distinguish between race and ethnicity, acknowledging that race refers to a population’s physical characteristics while ethnicity speaks to “social groups with a shared history, sense of identity, geography, and cultural roots.” Results are summarized in an infographic and video clip, as well. Why, after 50 years of struggle are, we no closer to an end to racism? Arguments are fairly logical and reasonably supported. Among the studies that described the demographics of their study population — most did not, which is also problematic — the vast majority used old-school, binary terms that compared Black people with white people, even if masked by labels such as European American versus African American or European descent versus African descent. What did your study reveal about the understanding of race, ethnicity and ancestry in the context of research? The race question is an important component of the census that provides critical information about the varied needs of our diverse communities. In clinical genetics, a person’s ancestral background is also important for tracking the representation of groups from different genetic ancestries in population databases; adequate representation of these groups ensures the results of a genetic test are interpreted appropriately. Ethnicity is how you identify based on nationality, language, culture and religion. Topics and subtopics clearly indicated. Here are several recent posts from the Versta Research Blog. Rubén Rumbaut addressed the first issue in his March 2011 interview on NPR’s Morning Edition (as well as his 2009 paper, “Pigments of our imagination: On the racialization and racial identities of ‘Hispanics’ and ‘Latinos’”) where he maintains that asking the race question is more about “social status” and putting people “in their place” than about understanding “a natural, fixed marker…inherent in human bodies.”  In a similar vein, fellow research blogger Jeffrey Henning concludes his February 2009 post on race and ethnicity by saying, “I look forward to the day when race and ethnicity are no longer standard demographic questions, and when skin color is no more important than hair color or eye color.”, If race and ethnicity questions are to be asked (and there are reasons for asking these questions, particularly when civil rights and money are involved), how should we ask them?
